Beck: Odelay

I doubt I need to say anything about this. A classic cover and album.
The dog in question is a photo of a Komondor, a rare Hungarian breed of dog with thick matted hair. I think Lenny Kravitz has one.

The Deluxe Edition of this album has been released. We’ve posted it here with lots more info.

Great CD and a very nice packaging to go with it. I think that was really the album that put Beck above “human status”.

I was pillaging a pile of books when I came across the AKC’s “Dog Encyclopedia” from the 70′s. The first glossy page in the otherwise boring book is this very photo. Two cheers for garbage!

One of my favourite cover arts! It easily makes it to my Top-5 list! As you mentioned, very classic indeed. When I first saw the 2nd cover (the new one) I thought the idea was really cool!

I remember reading an interview w Beck saying he had lifted the photo from an old 70′s Encyclopedia as he didn’t want to appear on the sleeve himself. Sounds like you have the very same book Tim !!

Definitely the greatest album of all time in my mind. By the way, the backstory behind this album cover (according to Wikipedia) is that Beck wanted to emulate a picture in the liner notes of Sixteen Stone (Bush) which depicted a brown Komondor being thrown up into the air.

I originally thought this was a disembodied mop-head jumping over a hurdle. Bloody scientologist.
