Mezzanine
If you were to pitch this idea in sketch form the concept would look pretty boring. But the combination of stark photo and chunky sans serif type create a cover that still today looks fresh. And like all good covers it’s memorable.

Mezzanine Foldout

The look and feel of the album was carried through with the rest of the packaging and the subsequent singles.

Mezzanine Singles Crop

One small factiod about the album I found interesting was “The entire album was provided on Massive Attack’s website for legal download many months before it was released on CD.”

For an album release in 1998 that must have meant all of 300 people could have downloaded it :)

there is a sculpture in the city centre of bristol which looks suspiciously like the bug on the cover… however there is not information on it whatsoever!! not even the name of the sculptor. let me know if you’d like a photo of it.

Nick Knight must’ve layered the photographs because I think they used real rhino beetles and then made them look mechanical with multiple legs, gorgeous!

Latest sleeve art from Massive Attack is not as haunting as this, but still it is very weird, I guess – http://coveryrshame.blogspot.com/2010/04/massiv
