It’s always good to see the designers behind classic album covers getting critical and commercial recognition. And few designers could boast of a career as celebrated and prolific as Storm Thorgerson.

Taken By Storm: The Album Art of Storm Thorgerson was published by Vision On in 2007. It’s a selection of some of his best work from the past 30 years. The book also spawned a traveling exhibition of the same name.

Sleeve lovers in Brisbane can still catch Taken by Storm, which is showing at Artisan Gallery until August 1.

The same show toured to Sydney at the Global Gallery last December. For more information about this legend of cover art, there’s a nice article in the Courier Mail and an interesting interview that featured in in Time Out Sydney from late last year.

  1. I must be the only person who finds the majority of Thorgerson's later output incredibly over-the-top, kitschy and somewhat embarrassing in the way that looking back on a year 12 art project is.

Still, credit where it's due, if it wasn't for him I probably wouldn't be in this business.

  2. Some works feel very Yr 12 art project to me others are great.

  3. I have this book (plus others including 'For the Love of Vinyl') all signed by Storm, for sale in the gallery

  5. Need more Hip-Hop covers done with the artistry…

  6. No, yer not. I myself prefer the work he did back in Hipgnosis with Aubrey Powell…

  7. Britain's Royal Mail searched through thousands of album covers and carried out extensive research before deciding on a final list of what they considered to be the ten best designed album covers of the past forty years. From this list they created a set of postage stamps with which they kicked off the philatelic year in 2010.

  8. thats NOT taken by storm cover above its the mars voltas first album (deloused in the comatorium) ?????????
