I would argue that these are not distilled down to a single image. The type is just as important as any icon in these compositions. It is pointing to whatever you put in the middle of that composition; it's the label, the signifier. One could try a number of different icons in that space and probably not lose too much meaning.

But sure I could make up any aul name and you wouldn't know the difference! What if I told you I was Rachel Dorrs from Doncaster? Or Matt Parks from Seattle? It hardly matters, neither is true. Or maybe one of them is.

And thanks for the link. I was thinking of something else entirely. And sorry to say but I dno't think much of those designs either. Not sure why, but they just don't appeal to me.

The problem when people don't post their real name is that no one has any real way of replying.

It wont be "show us your work then" but it does help give weight to your statement. If you post anon then we have no idea if you're a person who works at the local HMV or someone who runs a record label. The

It's just out of respect that you post your real name.

RE the penguin books are posted at the bottom of this post

Link again here
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joekral/sets/72157...

I don't post my real name for two very simple reasons:

1) I don't want to

2) I've seen too many comment/forum threads get derailed by the fallacy of the "let's see you do better/it's better than YOUR work!" type nonsense. Not that I'm saying that would happen here, but best to avoid it completely.

Can't find the Penguin books but I think I've seen them somewhere else and quite liked them.

Also do the Penguin books or the other examples posted leave you cold also?

The only thing I will disagree with you on your comment is the use of a fake name. Why not post your real details?

Leaves you cold? There is so much out there that can leave you cold this at least has some humor to it.

But I do enjoy hearing other people's opinions. I look at this "type of stuff" and I get inspired. What else in my life can I reduce to a single icon. Or what else can I juxtapose with a different style in an inventive way. That sort of inspired. But I guess I'm old fashioned haha

"You know which trend that I can't wait to be over? This trend of no-name, humourless designers with nothing better to do than bitch about other designers on the Internet."

He might be bitching but that doesn't invalidate his point. This was posted and comments were asked for so some comments it shall recieve.

This stuff just leaves me cold.

You know which trend that I can't wait to be over? This trend of no-name, humourless designers with nothing better to do than bitch about other designers on the Internet. What a wonderful community we're fostering.

I for one love this series (and the others presented here). It's obviously a little bit of non-billable fun and a splendidly executed one at that. It's little wonder that there are memes and imitations built around some of these. Memorable design and effective communication - that's what we should be aiming for - not perfection in alignment.

If a designer was able to pull something like this off in a real world scenario...it would be huge! But this is all practice, right? And it feels that way, like student work. The play button on the Moby cover isn't even centered. Lazy.

I can't wait for this trend to end.
