UNKLE: War Stories
With the 3rd Unkle release “War Stories”, gone are the references to Futura 2000 and his point man characters that have up until now visually identified UNKLE. In it’s place is much darker imagery. I was surprised to find out that the cover artwork was by none other than Robert Del Naja (3D) of Massive Attack. The album itself is dark and more of a rock album, and this cover suits.
I also post this album here because of the detail and impressive packaging on the limited edition double cd that you would expect from an UNKLE release. It consists of a 50 page booklet filled with some amazing artwork – paintings, photography, polaroids, sketches, montages, illustrations. The box and triple-fold insert is made of thick cardboard with high quality matte finish that feels closer to a hardcover book than a flimsy plastic cd. Even the plastic wrapping it came in was the type you might find for a designer collectible. This $30 purchase felt like buying a work of art, a book as well as the cds. I’ll be putting this up for display on my shelf.
Some artwork from the booklet:
Art Direction & Design by Ben Drury & James Lavelle
Paintings & Sketches by Robert Del Naja
Main portrait photography by Warren Du Preez & Nick Thornton Jones
Joshua Tree Photography by William Bankhead
Additional photography by Ben Drury & Robert Del Naja. Polaroids by James Lavelle.
